About this Service

As a longtime performer and forever student, I know how detrimental a strict teaching philosophy can be for a student’s development. Instead of following a specific method, I offer a holistic approach, taking pieces from different theories and adapting them to fit each student’s needs. Some lessons will focus on technique and exercises, others will be about songwriting and music theory, and some will simply be us jamming and reminding ourselves why we wanted to learn music in the first place. After each lesson, I also send a short video (or two) recapping what we went over for my students to reference during practice.

What is your rate?
60 min: $75
45 min: $60

If these rates are inaccessible to you or you would like accommodations for shorter/longer lessons and you feel passionately about studying with me, please reach out and we can discuss possible options.

Where do you teach?
I teach virtual and in person lessons from my home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. If you are looking for in person lessons at your home or at a studio in midtown, please contact me.

What levels do you teach?
I teach all levels, professional and non professional, from first timers to recording artists and Broadway performers. I do not teach students under 10 years old.

Do you do drop ins?
I do! Drop in students get added to a weekly mass text list announcing available times and can come and go as they like.

What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations can be made up to 24 hours before our lesson time. If for some reason you cancel a session with less than 24 hours notice and we are able to reschedule for a time within the same week, then we’re good. If rescheduling is not possible, then the lesson fee will be charged.

Late Policy?
All lessons start and end at their prescribed times. There are no makeups for late arrivals.

About this Lister

Hello! My name is Jacob Shipley and I am a Musician, Actor, Songwriter, and Private Music Teacher! I grew up outside of Albany, NY, went to Ithaca College where I received my BFA in Musical Theatre, and have been living here in NYC for the last 6 years. I am currently studying at NYU for my Certificate in Vocology. When I'm not doing music, I am an avid hiker and reader.

Teaching has been an incredible passion for me, opening up new minds to music through exploration of song and identity. I remember watching classmates of mine struggle with teachers who wouldn't listen to them or work to their needs or desires. I'm grateful that I get to work with students on what THEY want to learn, getting to constantly adjust and learn more myself.

Background and Expertise

I've led the first national tour of a Broadway musical, led/ensembled/swung regional theater productions, performed at weddings and private events both solo and with bands, rocked bar gigs, toured my own music, recorded my own projects and in collaborations, and even sung baby music classes in the middle of public parks. I’ve been teaching voice and guitar since the 11th grade and have had a private studio in NYC since 2018.

My students have performed on Broadway, National Tours, in Netflix specials, at venues such as The Green Room 42, and have released their own music with my help. I would love to be a part of your musical journey.
