friendly, quiet, respectful artist needs living space for me + kitty

Seeking Living Space

Location

Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens

Available

November 1, 2024

Transportation

near subway and citibike!

Size

120+ sq. ft.

I'm looking for a new place to land for the fall (anytime in October works, def by November 1). I'd consider subletting (I'll take great care of your space), or apartment shares, or whatever... and I'm especially interested in co-living in a friendly, communicative, progressive community (of any size).

I'm currently near the Montrose L, but pretty flexible on where I move (as long as it's close enough to a train and is walkable). No car, but I bike a lot (so nearby Citibike is very helpful). North Brooklyn is preferred, but I'd gladly consider Queens or Manhattan too.

Furnished or unfurnished is fine; I do have a bed but can re-home it for the right situation. I'm looking for a room that's at least 120 sqft, but larger is definitely better (lots of maker supplies). A place with two rooms to myself (one for the sleeping, one for making) would be the most ideal, but might be a dream I had once…

Hardwood floors preferred, and I like a shoe-less home (though I will follow your lead on that). I can be cluttered in my own space, but not dirty, and always keep shared spaces very neat and clean.

I give the utmost respect to the places I live and the people I live with, and expect the same. I’m always willing to volunteer my time/skills (woodworker, handy-person, artist) to help make our home better. I try to be extra conscientious of the space I take up and my impact on others, and strive to communicate proactively instead of letting things simmer.

The maximum I can afford is about $1300 all inclusive of utilities, though ideally it would be less than that. I have great credit, always pay rent on time, and am very responsible.

About This Lister

My name is J, and I'm a 40-something queer enby human (they/he).

I strongly prefer directness and honesty, and when living with others, I look for people that can commit to communicating their needs, desires, boundaries, and issues. I have no age or gender preferences, and while we don’t have to be friends, I’m looking for open and caring flatmates. Basically, I want to create a healthy and peaceful living environment, and am willing to put in the work.

I'm an artist/technologist/researcher/woodworker who does all kinds of things for money (event fabrication, teaching, retail, and some software/web development stuff too). ADHD is a blessing and a curse, but mostly a blessing. Though sometimes a curse. (Need work done on your place? I'm happy to figure out a work-trade situation. I’m currently remodeling an apartment in Queens, do great work, and have references.)

I'm kind, conscientious, very progressive, fairly tidy, and a generally all-around good human. I'm also responsible, pretty quiet, homebody-ish, and looking for similar flatmates who get along (though we don’t need to be in each others’ things all the time or bffs). A constant party vibe or band practice isn't really my thing anymore.

I have a pretty flexible schedule, so I'll be in the apartment at somewhat random times, but I can be very respectful if you work from home or have a particular schedule yourself. As with all things, proactive communication is key.

I have a partner who lives in Jackson Heights, and I stay there at least three nights a week (often taking Emma with me).

I don't smoke cigarettes, but am 420 friendly. I drink occasionally, but don't bring the party home. I'm not much of a chef, and mostly enjoy a vegan diet (with the occasional slice of pizza cheat).

Emma is a friendly and well-behaved kitty. She's a tiny, old soul (7lbs, 14yrs), and splits her time between sleeping and staring out the window all day (what a life!). She doesn't damage furniture, and only sheds a little in the spring. She can stay confined to my space if it's large enough, though letting her roam the apartment will make her happier (and give you the opportunity for cuddles:) She has lived with other animals before, and might be able to again on a case-by-case basis.
