Job Summary

ONE Lab Summer Studio 2025’s in-person courses investigate socio-ecological design, highlighting regenerative practices and use of biomaterials. We seek a Lead Instructor, for whom we provide a teaching assistant, & who will work closely with the Studio Instructor, to run a seminar-based morning discussion with students, who focus on one of the two following topics below:
-- Architecture & the Environment (environmentally-centered architecture)
-- Design for Future Cities (forward-thinking urban design)

There are two in-person Summer Studio sessions July -- August; preference is given to the candidate who can do both Session 1 and Session 2; all classes M-Th 10am – 3pm:
-- Session 1: M 7/14/25 – Th 7/24/25
-- Session 2: M 7/28/25 – Th 8/7/25

Each of the course’s days is divided into above-mentioned morning seminar sessions (10am – 12.30pm, with guest lecturers, studio tours and similar activities) and afternoon studio work (1pm – 3pm), with students moving between independent project work and check-ins with faculty.

The afternoon studio portion is led by a separate instructor, with ONE Lab’s director managing the collaboration between the two instructors, i.e. AM seminar & PM studio.

ONE Lab has a curriculum that the lead instructor should adapt to his/her/their own strengths; the program director works with the lead instructor to complete the syllabus.

To dig deeper into the parameters of the morning seminar: The Lead Instructor gives an introduction into the subject of environmentally-focused architecture & urban design, discussing the imperatives of working in these disciplines in order to help mitigate climate change and to identify ways in which proactive work fights against planetary extinction. This instructor works with the afternoon studio instructor to coordinate the students’ design and fabrication work so that it reflects the teaching points of the morning session.

Some class time may be spent outside in observational research, sketching, and journaling for project inspiration; there may also be some guests and/or tours booked in advance by the ONE Lab Director. The Lead Instructor also directs students through writing and other pedagogical exercises that hone critical thinking, and helping students prepare a final project, which is documented in a digital portfolio.

The final afternoon is devoted to students sharing their finished project with guest critics from related industries and professions; the Lead Instructor is required to be at the final Thursday afternoon studio, in addition to the morning classes.

The Lead Instructor is a key position for ONE Lab courses, and will play a vital role in making the program a success.

Lead Instructor: Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design, or a related field is required, with a practice focused on fighting climate change and if possible; a graduate degree (obtained or in progress) or relevant professional experience is preferred.

The Instructor should have at least two years of assistant teaching experience or at least one year of experience as a lead teacher/course designer, with experience in teaching architecture or urban design.

ONE Lab students work with biomaterials so the instructor should at least be familiar with them, in particular mycelium, wheat grass, and bioplastics, if not fully conversant with them and the associated methodologies.

ONE Lab encourages applicants from traditionally underrepresented communities to apply for this position.
