Beam Camp seeks practicing artists/makers to work collaboratively with our Specialist team to oversee one of the four workshops (referred to as Guilds) located on our campus: Woodshop, Barny’s (metal shop), Art Barn (Arts studio primarily used for ceramics and textile work) or the FabLab (electronics and computing space).
All Specialists are responsible for helping campers in their workshop navigate through the Independent Work program area over the course of the summer. This includes guiding campers through designing, planning, developing, and constructing their original projects. Specialists are responsible for creating supplemental resources to help campers move through their independent project, monitor campers progress, and efficiently order materials to keep their shop stocked with both fundamental materials as well as niche materials needed for individual camper projects. In addition to stewarding the Independent Work program area, Specialists also run 1-2 orientation workshops at the beginning of the camp session to introduce campers to their spaces, learn how to engage with the shop space and tools safely, and gain basic skills to be able to utilize the shop.
Specialists will have the support of at least one Instruction Focused Counselor collaborating with them to host the workshop space. The relationship between Specialists and this counselor is one of mutual support and learning, in which responsibilities for maintaining the space, tracking Independent Work, and supporting Campers is shared.
When Specialists are not hosting campers in their workshop, you may also participate in the execution of the Beam Project alongside the Project Director and all other support staff on a need basis. Specialists will also be called upon to support general functions and operations of camp from cabin supervision, village duty, facilities maintenance, etc. These parts of camp are the shared responsibility of everyone who joins us for the summer.
The camp is in New Hampshire but we operate in Brooklyn through the year. For this reason, our staff primarily comes from the NYC area, but folks are welcome to apply from either location!
Hi, my name is Brett and I am the Staff director for Beam Camp in New Hampshire.
At Beam Camp, youth aged 9-17 and staff learn to make their ideas a reality. Through fine and manual arts, technology, and collaboration, Beam Campers cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design, and the creative process. We have a fully equipped woodshop, metal shop, fabrication lab, and an arts and craft barn ready for ceramics, sewing, painting and more. Campers spend a good portion of their day in those shops and making their own self-designed projects known as Independent Work projects. The centerpiece of camp is the large-scale Big Project. This is a project selected from an international open call, and incorporates elements of metalworking, woodworking, and related skills and practices.
This all takes place on hundreds of acres of forest and mountains with two lakes for swimming and boating, and plenty of space for physical activity hiking, sports, campfires, and more classic camp activities!
We are looking for staff to join us at Beam Camp this summer in several roles at our sleep-away summer camp in New Hampshire. Year round, we operate in Brooklyn, NY, but each summer we shuttle staff and campers up to camp to spend seven weeks building incredible things with the camp community and back to the city again in August.
