Brooklyn Navy Yard, BROOKLYN
minimum fee of $2000 per session (possibly more, based on program outcomes and budget capabilities)

ONE Lab Summer Studio 2025’s in-person courses investigate socio-ecological design, highlighting regenerative practices and the use of biomaterials. We seek a Studio Instructor who will work with a lead instructor (who runs the AM seminar section, & an teaching assistant intern), to run an afternoon design workshop (ideating, growing biomaterials, teaching/guiding students in basic model-making) who focus on one of the
two following topics below:
-- Architecture & the Environment (environmentally-centered architecture)
-- Design for Future Cities (forward-thinking urban design)

The studio instructor should have a background in at least one of these subject areas.

There are two Summer Studio 2025 sessions from July -- August, + late spring prep work.

-- Again, priority is to hire someone who can do both Session 1 and Session 2:
-- Session 1, Mondays - Thursdays, 10am - 3pm
M 7/14/25 – Th 7/24/25

-- Session 2: Mondays - Thursdays, 10am - 3pm
M 7/28/25 -- Th 8/7/25

Each of the course’s days is divided into above-mentioned morning seminar sessions (10am – 12.30pm, with guest lecturers, studio tours and similar activities) and afternoon
studio work (1pm – 3pm), with students moving between independent project work and check-ins with faculty. Studio instructors will attend AM class on session's first & last days.
Instructors arrive *no later* than 30 minutes before designated class time and stay until the classroom is cleared & cleaned (i.e., picking up all class materials; there’s no heavy cleaning, as Brooklyn STEAM has janitorial staff).

ONE Lab has a curriculum that the instructors can/should adapt to his/her/their own strengths; the program director works with the instructors to complete the syllabus. NB: the Lead Instructor, as the title implies, takes the lead on the syllabus but the Studio
Instructor gives input and will assist in prepping the class decks.

To dig deeper into the parameters of ONE Lab Summer Studio: The Lead Instructor gives an introduction into the subject of environmentally focused architecture & urban design, discussing the imperatives of working in these disciplines in order to help
mitigate climate change and to identify ways in which proactive work fights against planetary extinction. The afternoon Studio Instructor then directs, in coordination with the Lead Instructor, the students’ design and fabrication work so that it reflects the
teaching points of the morning session.

Some class time may be spent outside in observational research, sketching, and journaling for project inspiration; there may also be some guests and/or tours booked in
advance by the ONE Lab Director, but these will normally be in the morning session. The Lead Instructor also directs students through writing and other pedagogical
exercises that hone critical thinking, and helping students prepare a final project, which is documented in a digital portfolio, with the Studio Instructor working to support these efforts.

The final Thursday afternoon is devoted to students sharing their finished project with guest critics from related industries and professions; the Studio Instructor is required to
be at the final Thursday morning class, which is in effect a studio session, in addition to the first Monday morning class.

The Studio Instructor is a key position for ONE Lab courses, and will play a vital role in making the program a success.

1. A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design, or related field is required, with a practice focused on fighting climate change; preference given to graduate degree (obtained or in progress). Teaching experience required (see below for specifics).
