Glitter House is a co-op that centers queer and trans people. The $1500 rent includes monthly utilities (the bills for electricity, heating, wifi etc, but also basic supplies such as rice, lentils, flour etc) as well as a weekly farm share for vegetables and fruits.
You will be living with four others, all of whom are cool and politically oriented people. Some housemates have health concerns, so this is a very covid conscious household. Depending on your exposure levels outside the house, you would likely need to stay masked when in certain common spaces.
Housemates share cleaning responsibilities, and you will take over my share of things when I'm gone. We meet weekly, as schedule permits. As someone subletting for a couple of months, your responsibilities in that regard will be less than others, but it would be good to attend these meetings. It's primarily a space for checking in and building community, while also working through house matters.
The house has two shared kitchens, one right by the room you'll have. The toilets are shared - there's one near the room, of which you will likely be the primary user. There's an in-house washer and dryer in the basement, and we have a backyard.
The room is large (14 feet wide, 12 feet deep). The two windows are West facing, and get good sunlight in the afternoons. There is one comfortable standing desk, one ergonomic chair, one regular chair, and one bed with a firm matress. I will clear some of the shelves for you to keep your things. And I'm happy to discuss any specific needs you may have. The room is on the 3rd/4th floor (depends on how you count flights of stairs), and there is no lift.
The house is located in a fantastic area, on the norther edge of Crown Heights. It is close to various grocery stores and shops, close to bus and metro stops, and a bunch of different restaurants, cafes and parks. It's a lovely spot to enjoy summer in Brooklyn from!
In reaching out, please indicate if you have had any prior collective living exprience, and confirm if you are okay with abiding with covid protocols that may include staying masked in common spaces in the house. It may not be possible to accomodate for pets (there currently aren't any), but if you have any, I'd request you share details, and I can get back after discussing with housemates. That aside, please feel free to share anything about yourself that you'd like, and ask any questions :) If you are okay sharing a link to a social media account or other profile/website, that would be great.
I'm 37 years old. I teach college students literature and anthropology, and will be travelling for fieldwork over the summer. My housemates include a school teacher, a film-maker, a student, and an archivist. The age range of current residents is from mid-20s into 40s, and it's a multiracial household. We all are or have been involved in various activist organisations.
One of 5 people renting the house
1) I will respond within a couple of days to any enquiries/we can talk on the phone/schedule a visit. Before confirming a spot, I would schedule a (virtual or in-person) meeting including all housemates, and then let you know.
2) You should pay $750 as a security deposit to confirm your spot. This amount will be returned to you within a week of you vacating the house.
3) You should pay the $750 for May at least two days before you move in. For the rents for June onwards, the rent will be due by the 25th of the month before. So for example, the $1500 for June will be due by May 25th.
If any of the payment timelines present an inconvenience, please let me know, and we can discuss if any deadlines can be adjusted.
