Hi! We’re Swamp Dog Hobble (named after a native plant 🌱).
We’re a communal house (a house! a community!) in Flatbush, and a few of us are leaving. Maybe you’d like to live here. Here are some basic specs:
We have one long term and one short term living opportunity in January and February 2025!
Three bathrooms, seven bedrooms, one tiny guest room (the Panic Room), two kitchens, at least four common rooms, a full basement with drums, guitars, keyboards, amps, etc.
Also: washer/dryer, large porch, large garage with woodshop, backyard, raised bed gardens, apple and peach trees, gazebo (soon to be greenhouse or dance studio?!)
Lastly: ~1000 books, grand piano. We live near Brooklyn College, at the end of the 2/5 lines. Average monthly cost of living is ~$1400 (rent accounts for 1100 of that figure), though it fluctuates from person to person. That fluctuation doesn’t have to do with the qualities of this or that room; instead, we pay in proportion to income, and general financial anxiety. Also, that number includes not only rent, but also utilities and groceries, the cost of which is always shared. With our current financial picture, we are looking for members who feel comfortable contributing $1400+.
So yeah, this communal house thing. Basically, we like to be involved in each other’s lives. We sit down at least once a week for dinner together, we check in with each other, we paint rooms new colors; there’s big dinner parties, live shows in the basement, Fried Chicken Sundays when the weather’s right; we like projects, we like to do stuff; we draw in the stairways, bake bread, move furniture around; every Friday we cook about 20 gallons of food and take it down to a distribution center for the city’s migrant population. What else?
There’s CDs or records playing on the first floor all the time. Everyone’s always in the middle of telling a story. For a while we kept running out of Cholula, but we’ve got that figured out now. We aim for seven in the house.
