What I'm looking for/how I interact with my living space:
-Looking to stay in Ditmas Park/Kensington/Flatbush/Windsor Terrace
-Maximum $1,200 budget with utilities, the ideal would be keeping under $1100 with utilities.
-Looking for a room in a communal/friendly house for the long-term.
-I can move in anytime between April 1st and April 30th.
-I don't have any dietary restrictions, pet allergies, or other allergies. I don't have pets, these are other peoples dogs.
-I pay rent on time, consistently, I have the receipts to prove it, and I have a good credit score.
-I'll be bringing my own furniture, and not looking for a furnished space.
-I consistently clean up after myself in the kitchen and bathroom but might occasionally leave a craft project out in a common area.
-I work 9-5 Monday-Thursday in person and WFH Friday, I’m an executive assistant at a social impact consulting firm.
-I spend about half my non-working time at home and half out and about in the city. I love walking dogs at Sean Casey animal rescue and have been working alongside a mutual aid group and their weekly distributions.
-I’m a solid ambivert who enjoys spending time with others & needs my alone time. I genuinely enjoy living with others and like communal living because it’s an example of care and support that can move against oppressive systems. In common spaces I’m often chatty but also take into account body language and “reading the room”.
-I consider myself straight-forward communicator and might over communicate at times.
-I've lived communally in a variety of structures for most of my adult life. I was living in a communal space but we've been having a combination of people moving in with their partners/mold issues/negligence by our landlord, and so many people are moving out of our unit and I'm seeking my next space.
About me:
-I’m a queer, white, cis woman originally from Michigan but have lived in Brooklyn for 3.5 years. I love it here, specifically the Ditmas Park/Kensington/Flatbush/Windsor Terrace area and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I've really only lived in this area and love how close it to to Prospect Park, that there are tree lined streets, it feels a bit more "real" and down to earth than other neighborhoods, and that it's still close to public transit.
-For fun I love crafting, upcycling, and getting creative with found materials. Myself and my friend have started a slow crafting group where we host mending circles & workshops with almost all second hand materials. I find myself out and about at a lot of crafting workshops, slow fashion, and environmentalist events.
-I love being involved in the neighborhood. I walk dogs at Sean Casey animal rescue, have been helping out at weekly mutual aid distributions, I'm a member at the Food Coop, go to yoga at Sagoya, and my favorite coffee places are Blue Parlour and Bad Therapy.
-I think a lot about “trash” and how when we are often done with things in the United States it gets pushed onto places in the Global South to deal with perpetuating the cycle of Waste Colonialism. In my own life, and the spaces I find myself, I try to get myself and the people around me to think through how we can break that cycle and think through things more circularly. I hosted seasonal clothing swaps and hosted a Free Store in my backyard a few years ago and want to build on these events so that people get the items they want/need and they stay out of the waste stream. I would not ask that these types of events be hosted in my future home, just wanted to give examples of alternative systems.
-I have a wonderful boyfriend who lives in the neighborhood.
-Ditmas Park claim to fame: I hosted the Free Store during 2023 Artmageddon in my backyard.
-If anyone has/knows of an open room, please let me know! My instagram is below.
