I’m subletting my spacious, uncluttered, and very, very comfortable one-bedroom apartment from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026.

Stuytown stretches from 14th Street and Avenue C to 14th Street and First Avenue, and it goes up from 14th Street to 20th Street near Gramercy Park. My apartment is approximately at 15th and Avenue B. My closest entrances are 14th and Avenues A or B, or 16th and Avenue C. (I use the Avenue A entrance, because the L stop is right there.)

Not only does the apartment have a 7th-floor view of the East River, but it’s got a dishwasher, window, and stainless steel appliances in the very useable, nice kitchen, and a window in the bathroom (must-haves for me in NYC). There’s a large closet by the front door, a linen closet by the bathroom, and a closet in the bedroom (there are actually two, but I’m going to use one for storage). There are air conditioners in both the bedroom and living room. The building has two elevators, a large, clean, well-lit laundry room on the first floor and a full-time porter.

I have a Sony TV mounted on the living room wall and a gorgeous, linen-covered, feather-filled couch and large, armchair from Sixpenny. My bookshelves are from Design Within Reach. I may take my bed, linens, and most of my dishes, pots and pans, and silverware with me, too. I furnished the place to feel kind of easy and peaceful. You’ll have to put some rugs down, cause I’m taking mine. There's simple lightwood dining room table and desk. I'm not sure if I'm taking my Aeron desk chair or not.

Some Stuytown apartments are noisy (the walls are pretty thin), but the neighbors on either side of me are very quiet older couples. The people in the building in general are a great, diverse bunch. There are some NYU students, some designers, artists, veterans, lawyers, etc. There are young families and old people.

Stuytown is a wonderful community with grass and trees and its own security. There’s a farmer’s market every Sunday in the spring and summer, and open-air movies on the Oval (which is like a grassy college quad in the middle of the complex) on Wednesday evenings. When I get to the entrance of Stuytown from being out all day in the city, I feel like I can relax.

The nearest subway station (the L) is just outside the complex on 14th Street and Avenue A (it’s the First Avenue stop). It’s one stop away from Williamsburg, and two stops from Union Square in the other direction. I often take the crosstown bus from that same corner to the West Village or the Meatpacking District, which is a 10- or 15-minute trip.

There’s a Target across the street and a Trader Joe’s. One of the new Whole Foods grab-and-go stores is opening up in Stuytown in May.

I also walk regularly down to Soho and the LES. Or I sometimes head over to Gramercy Park or NoMad, which are on the Westside of the complex and north a bit.

One-bedroom apartments in Stuytown go for $4500, plus AC and cable; I’m subletting mine for $3300, including utilities. I’ll ask you to sign a sublease and pay a deposit of one month’s rent, returnable within a week after you move out. There are keycards with your picture on them instead of keys to get into the building, and so I’ll have to be here with you to make that happen. The way we’ll do it is assign you as an occupant in the apartment.

Because of the thin walls, I really don’t want someone who’s going to have big parties (beyond dinner parties). And there’s no smoking in the apartment.

I normally have a woman come and clean every two weeks. If you’re not someone who cleans yourself, I’d ask that you have someone come in regularly, and would love it if you used the person I use. She’s wonderful and trustworthy and knows the place really well. I can take $300 a month onto the rent and make that happen, if that's easiest.

About This Lister

I’m an older, single writer and magazine editor, born and raised in New York. I’m moving to LA for a year (or maybe two) to be near my daughter and her first child, who’s due in June. I want to come back to my life here, so I figure a year or two will be good.
