About this Service

Date & Time
Sunday, October 20, 1:30 - 4:30p (or 1:30 - 6:45p)

Seminar Description
Taiji EastWest gladly welcomes guest instructor Laoshi Jamie McCulloch for a three-hour Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) seminar. Please join us in this open gathering for practitioners of all self-defense and martial arts, from beginners to advanced. We'll meet from 1:30 - 4:30 in Midtown Manhattan just south of Bryant Park.

Jamie will begin with key warm-ups and then delve into the fundamental hip movements of the four energies (sì jìn / 四劲: peng, liu, ji, an), exploring their practical applications in defensive maneuvers, throws, and strikes, plus progressive drills and partner work. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of these core principles and their integration into fluid Taijiquan movement. By the end, we aim to synthesize the learned techniques into a cohesive partnered flow drill and cultivate embodied cognition (learning through direct experience).

This will be a fine opportunity to expand your Taijiquan repertoire and gain valuable insights from Laoshi Jamie McCulloch. All skill levels welcome.

Push Hands Add-On
Make out a full day and stick around for our weekly Push Hands group afterwards (5:00 - 6:45p) as Jamie plans to stay on for some for some fun and additional coaching (fee structure below).

Instructor Information: Jamie McCulloch
My Taijiquan journey began serendipitously. Introduced to Wing Tsun and Taiji by a college friend, I soon found myself captivated by Taiji's transformative effects on my body. Seeking to heal a persistent stomach ailment, I embarked on a quest to learn from the masters and relocated to Taiwan, which turned out to be a haven for Taiji refugees from mainland China.

Miaoli, on the W Coast became my training ground, and after initial exposure to the Chinese Taiji 42 national standard form, through perseverance and a bit of luck, I gained acceptance as a student under Master Chio, of the Cheng Man-ching Yang line. Two grueling years of intensive training followed, honing my skills and deepening my understanding of the art.

While in Taiwan, I was immersed in the rich Taiji culture, learning not just the forms but also the spirit of the practice from the local community. This experience has profoundly shaped my teaching approach. Since returning, I've shared my passion for Taiji with students in various settings. My continued exploration of other martial arts, including Karate and boxing, enriches my Taiji practice and teaching style. The camaraderie with fellow practitioners, like my Taiji brother Inoshi, fuels my ongoing dedication to this lifelong journey.
