I independently navigated the academic world since applying to community college and throughout the process of earning a Ph.D. Being in this world taught me that there are barriers and implied knowledge in academia that many who are new or are a returning student are not aware of and it puts many at a disadvantage.
Now on the other side, my services are designed to disillusion academia and the admissions process including - application timelines, feedback on statements and interview prep, and specific advising. Academia should not be as confusing or nuanced as it is and it motivates me to share the knowledge and tools that I have gathered.
I have a M.A. in Research Psychology and Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from The New School for Social Research. For the last several years I also worked in Academic Affairs as a Master's Student Advisor. In this role I became aware of the admissions and retention processes on every scale. In addition to the work load and course planning, many students I worked with also struggled with understanding faculty expectations, how to navigate introducing a research project, and when and how to engage in academic politics. I also learned that small amounts of moral support are extremely valuable. As a longtime graduate student and award-winning instructor of my own courses at The New School and Columbia, I have inside knowledge and experience with how the academic world functions and how to survive and thrive in it.
