Two adjoining rooms, one with private shower/toilet/sink, and share kitchen/LR/porch in beautiful Victorian house

Rooms for Rent

$1,700/month

Location

Ditmas Park, Brooklyn

Available

Transportation

Q and B trains within 5 blocks/5 minute walk and B103 bus 3 minutes walk.

You would have two rooms on the 3rd floor. (The only other room on the 3rd floor is set up as a gym that you are welcome to use.) The bigger of the two rooms has its own toilet/sink/shower. You would be sharing the house's 1st floor which has a beautiful huge kitchen adjoining a sitting room with a Steinway grand piano. There's also a cozy living room with a wood burning fireplace, and a wonderful front porch. Washer/dryer on the 2nd floor is shared with you.

The street is lined with gorgeous trees and is very quiet yet it's a block from Cortelyou Road which is super fun, full of restaurants and cafes as well as two great health food stores within a 3-4 minute walk. We have a driveway so if you have a car we can talk about possible use. The house is a 4-5 minute walk to the Q train at Cortelyou Road and 5 minutes to the B train at New Kirk Plaza.

We are a very friendly, interesting (hope that doesn't sound pretentious) mother (career was working for the U.N. making films in wars and natural disasters and before that at CNN and ABC) and adult daughter (26) who are quiet and considerate, yet enjoy some conversation here and there. I've had a wonderful, quiet and kind male partner for 14 years who is based elsewhere and not at my house the majority of time.

We try to stay neat and uncluttered, put things away in the kitchen, and don't leave dirty dishes in the sink but to be transparent, beyond that, we are not perfectly or obsessively clean at all times, and constant mopping and vacuuming doesn't happen. (I wish we could afford a regular cleaning person but we can't.) To us, there are too many other good things to do in life that nose-to-the-grindstone cleaning--so the point is that we're not that bad but we are probably not neurotic enough to keep a clean freak happy.

We are a 15 minute walk and 5 minute bike ride to 500 acre Prospect Park--an amazing place with hiking trails and bike routes. We have a garage where you can store your own bicycle and a basement where you can store stuff as well if necessary.

We have always had a dog and our current pup is a small, adorable little rescue from the streets of Puerto Rico. Animal lovers preferred.

We are looking for someone who wants to stay for a long time (at least 2 years, we hope), preferably but not necessarily female, who is relaxed, considerate and friendly but is also not too intense or in your face. Need solid references and proof of income for the past 2 years.

This is not an accessible dwelling situation as it has lots of stairs both to enter the house and then to get to the 3rd floor.

About This Lister

My 26 year old daughter and I (she/her) live happily together in this house, and neighborhood, that we love. We are quiet from a group house perspective but are friendly and love conversation here and there. I have two older adult children, an incredible son on the autistic spectrum who lives independently in the Hudson Valley and a wonderful daughter who is a therapist/poet/artist/activist in St. Louis. They are biological kids and the daughter who lives with me in Brooklyn was adopted from China.

I am now retired but spent 25 years as head of video for UNICEF and have traveled to 60 countries in my life. For UNICEF I created productions (wrote, produced, directed) in war zones and humanitarian emergencies that focused on children, what they were experiencing and need. I also worked with lots of celebrities in L.A. and NYC doing TV public service commercials. I love to sail and race small boats as does my partner (he/him) in NY, Long Island, Delaware and for big regattas. My partner and I race a 2-handed boat and we each do single-handed dinghies. He is kind of a champion and I started late, and just enjoy the challenge.

I care a huge amount about social justice and am very progressive politically. I have a wide array of friends--many living from California to the U.K. unfortunately, but also enjoy spending a lot of time alone with my dog in my bedroom, which I love. I'm into fitness and health but not always consistent.

I will speak for my daughter because she said I could and say she is charming and friendly but quite a private person. She and I are very close, and she has several close friends whom I really love. She adores animals, loves travel, K-pop and Korean culture, knitting, and other pursuits. She went to Laguardia High School of Music and Art and was admitted for three talents--viola, piano and voice, and spent a bit of time at U. of Delaware. She is not currently working.

Lister's Relationship to the Space

I own it and live there with my 26 year old daughter, when he's in town (not that often) my male partner of 14 years.

Rental requirements

We need one month's rent and a month's security deposit, proof of income for the past two years, three solid references, and we will provide a standard lease for all to sign. We would like to meet you in person at a neutral place. In terms of checking references, we will not belabor the process or take up much time but would prefer the reference checks to be on FaceTime or zoom.

We've been lucky enough to find housemates through friends and family members for the past 4 years so trust was automatically assumed. I hope you understand why we need to be cautious and thorough.

Pets Policy

We will consider a dog but unfortunately my partner is allergic to cats (although we love them). My dog is sweet and gets along with other dogs but she is small (16 pounds) and I wouldn't want her overwhelmed and obviously I wouldn't want her in any physical danger. So I think I need to ask that any dogs be under 25 pounds and very sweet and friendly with no behavioral issues. I've heard some horror stories about seemingly friendly larger dogs attacking and killing smaller dogs while the pet parents were out and I just can't take that chance.

That said, this is an amazing house and neighborhood to have a dog. We use the fenced in back yard (cement ground) for our dog's needs during bad weather, walking the beautiful neighborhood is a joy and there is an off leash enclosed dog park a 15 minute walk away off Prospect Park with a special small dog area.
